From a young age, working with flowers was a part of everyday life for Alexandra Scholtz, who grew up in the Hudson Valley region of New York with a family-owned flower shop. After relocating to California 14 years ago, she went on to found floral design studio WildFlora, and is now entering her 13th year as its owner. With a lifelong background in floristry, her work spans many facets of the field, with a strong focus on retail floristry — particularly flower shop-centered design and boutique-style gift-giving.
A Creative Path Rediscoverd
Although she earned a degree in Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management and has always been drawn to people-centered work, it became clear early on that something was missing — her creative side wasn’t fully expressed. Flowers had always been woven into her life, but it wasn’t until she stepped away from them that she realized just how essential they were.
Returning to florals and opening WildFlora felt instinctual rather than strategic — less about choosing a career and more about returning to a way of working that feels true to who she is.
The Energy of Flowers
Flowers have the power to completely transform a space simply through their presence. While not everyone may pause to notice, slowing down to appreciate flowers or foliage can shift a mood, elevate energy, and create a sense of calm or joy.
Their beauty lies not just in how they look, but in how they make people feel.
As a deeply empathetic person, she is very aware of the emotions and energy people carry. As a florist — especially in a retail setting — her work becomes about helping customers translate their feelings into something tangible, whether it’s a gesture of love, support, celebration, or remembrance.
Being part of that exchange, and knowing WildFlora helps people show up for one another through thoughtful gift-giving, is both meaningful and deeply encouraging.
The Balance of Creativity and Business
Balancing creativity and business is a delicate dance. Some days are filled with ideas, inspiration, and hands in flowers; others are focused on planning and logistics. Learning to honor both — and to give herself grace when one takes precedence — has allowed the work to feel sustainable, fulfilling, and truly her own.
It’s a balance that took time to understand, but one that has been worth every step.
