Award-Winning Packaging Design for Starbucks

This single-origin coffee traditionally features the rendering of the revered Sumatran tiger. And since this piece is a limited-time offering, I had complete freedom to create the piece in any way I wanted.

I love the look of Risograph prints, as well as silkscreening, so I decided to experiment and take that approach. Therefore, I used lithography by way of loose overlapping colors, to provide depth and emotion to the commercial product, thinking of it more as a band poster or Riso art print.

The company had never printed packaging this way before, and they were excited to see the “magic third colors” that came forward with the overlaps. It was a major production risk, but because of the bravery and skill of the print masters involved, it came out beautifully. This piece uses five spot colors, with opaque white (only behind the tiger)

and matte finish across random foliage.

I worked with a stellar team of print experts and friends as well to help make this piece truly shine!
